From pre-use checks to detailed inspections

  • Schedule Manager

Pre-use checks, interim inspections and detailed inspections run as separate schedules on the same harness, connector or rope. Each carries its own checklist, its own certificate and its own list of who's authorised to sign it off.

  • Scanning (NFC/QR)

Tag harnesses, connectors and rope, then scan on site to pull up the full history in seconds, even offline in a synced account.

  • Product Directory and checklists

Manufacturer-approved checklists for Petzl, DMM, Teufelberger and 120+ brands in the Papertrail Product Directory, including PPE inspection records for harnesses and connectors. Build your own with the Checklist Editor on Expert and Enterprise.

  • Analytics

See compliance status across every harness, connector and site. During a Petzl Astro recall, 360 Rope filtered its records instantly to see which harnesses were affected and where, instead of calling technicians to check labels in the rain.

Full traceability, from first inspection to retirement

360 Rope is IRATA-regulated and Yorkshire-based, inspecting around 150 climbing walls a year alongside contracts spanning offshore NDT to Headingley Stadium's roof. Petrofac manages more than 50,000 components across its projects and locations.

“We did 1,000 items over two days. When you're doing proper PPE inspections on the ground, helmets, harnesses, 30 of the damn things at a time, the value is in how fast you can accelerate. There's no way you could touch that speed via Excel.”

James Pallatt

Director, 360 Rope

  • “If someone asks where a component is, we can not only say where it is but also what condition it's in, its retirement date and its full working and inspection history. We could pick up a single wire sling for example and see everything about it instantly.”

    Lee Walker

    Rope Access Manager, Petrofac

  • “Great user friendly software that keeps all inspections easily accessible for our clients. We also use the software to ensure our own Rope Access & Lifting Equipment is LOLER Compliant with full traceability.”

    Robert Clarke

Rope Access Contracts Manager, Infinite Access Services

Hand equipment on with its inspection history intact

360 Rope has used PartnerHub to help youth climbing organisations take on second-hand equipment that larger clients no longer need. The inspection history moves into the youth centre's own account with the equipment data, so the centre starts with the full history of the equipment, a record it can show an auditor.

  2. See

  3. Move

When equipment changes hands for good, move the shared record into the new account, and its full history moves with it

Frequently asked questions

Will our technicians actually use it on site?

Yes. Scan a tag, work through the checklist, save, whether that's one harness before a shift or dozens at once. When questions come up, our support team's average first response time is under 8 minutes. Petrofac's Lee Walker: "if we have an issue, it takes two or three minutes to get through to Support and they're always ready to help."

How fast can we migrate our existing equipment register?

Your account doesn't start empty. Papertrail builds new accounts from industry-specific templates, so a rope access company opens with the folder structure, inspection frequencies, equipment states and record blueprint built around pre-use, interim and detailed schedules, not a blank account you configure yourself. Bringing your existing equipment list and inspection history across is a separate step, and we help you do it.

How does Papertrail match IRATA's inspection requirements?

IRATA ICOP describes three levels of check: a pre-use check before each use, a more frequent interim inspection, and a periodic detailed inspection carried out by a competent person. Papertrail runs these as separate schedules on the same harness, connector or rope, each with its own checklist, certificate and list of who's authorised to sign it off.

What does an inspection record contain?

Everything an auditor or a colleague might ask for: the checklist used, who signed it off and when, the certificate it produced, condition, retirement date and the full working history behind it. That's what lets Petrofac track more than 50,000 components across its projects and answer, for any single one of them, where it is, what condition it's in and when it retires, without digging through files.

Who is allowed to sign off an inspection?

Whoever your safety management system names as competent for that check. Papertrail doesn't set the competency bar; it enforces whichever one you've set. Each schedule carries its own list of authorised signatories, so only someone qualified for that specific check can close it out.
